nep was a loose multimedia collective formed in 1982 zagreb, ex-yugoslavia. the founder dejan krsic collaborated with various artists in a quest of re-thinking the stale concepts of art history, position of the author and the barriers between pop and elitist high culture. heavily influenced by walter benjamin and andy warhol in theory and brian eno and kraftwerk in music, krsic created nep as an umbrella term (meaning nova evropa) of diverse rule-breaking activities, covering graphic design, music, photography, video, news-media and theoretical work.

the first clouded vision recordings release of 2017 comes from label owner matt walsh teaming up with stratowerx aka sam russo. the ep is completed with a remix from one of matt�s long-term studio partners, scott fraser, who makes a long awaited debut on the label. the three tracks were recorded over the course of 2016, with the two producers sending parts back and forth via email and the result sees a clear middle ground of minimalistic analogue electro and techno. scott�s surface pressure remix turns the first track �no function� into a dark drexciyan electro brooder, rounding off the ep very nicely indeed.

i released the original 12inch volume of five fingers of death battle breaks way back in 1998, while i was living in oakland and then san francisco during a time of incredible movement and creativity within the suddenly exploding scratch dj scene. the term turntablist, coined by dj disk, had yet to really catch on outside of the bay area scratch fraternity. having recently moved to california from new york, pauls turntable aesthetics were strictly 80s east coast and was more concerned with catching doubles (beat juggling) and overall party rocking. in other words, the science of scratching was not something i was even contemplating.needless to say, i was completely amazed and overwhelmed with what djs like qbert, shortcut, apollo and mixmaster mike were doing. �a safe place to be naked� is s. fidelity�s debut album, which will be released on may 5th via jakarta records. it features 12 tracks, capturing the producer�s quest for a fresh sound, which he elaborated over the last two years, locked in his tiny basement studio in berlin. evolving from there the he has also released an ep with feelin music in 2014, and �sidekicks�, a joint project with long-term friend and collaborator bluestaeb in 2016. by working with artists like tru thoughts singer harleighblu and label mate juju rogers as well as fellow producers bluestaeb and shuffle jack, his lp �a safe place to be naked� plays with sampled vocals and even his own voice � often distorted, but still present. s. fidelity was born in st. gallen, switzerland, mainly works in berlin and currently resides in london. as a producer he developed a unique and always driving sound, combining sampling techniques and classic beat making with unusual drum patterns, modern synth and atmospheric sound effects. s. fidelity�s laid-back eclecticism is marked by a deep knowledge and fascination for pop culture as a whole. his idea of fresh hiphop references to various genres, including jazz, ambient, disco and electronica. the lp contains an a2 poster & download code.

audiosapr is one of the most consistent albums you�re likely to come across in russia�s gost zvuk entire back catalogue. surprisingly, the full-length by saint petersburg�s scene veteran kuzma palkin is a compilation of random jams and studio recordings he made in the period of 2014-2015, carefully pieced together by label�s masterminds. sapr stands for the system of automatic projection (a russian term for computer-aided design, cad) which defines the album�s experimental yet complex and interlocking heart. based around a central theme of immediacy and spontaneity, audiosapr builds upon the foundations of early, pre-detroit era of electro and techno, and then progresses the wispy entrails of analogue gear in a contemporary dancefloor direction. it�s clearly music that can be attributed as hybrid, however it�s not you re going to think about while listening to �audiosapr�, palkin�s definitely most inspiring work to date.

a negative hallucination is an idea that was first put forward by sigmund freud in 1890. he used the term to describe how a hypnotised person could be led to be unable to see a person or thing that was right in front of them once out of the hypnotised state, creating a gap in their reality. sadly, this gap in reality seems endemic in the minds of many in the world, whether from lack of access to facts or from wilful ignorance. the result is the same regardless: a world where many oppressed peoples reality is edited out of the conversation. noleian reusse (half of africans with mainframes) and thomas cox (one third of pittsburgh track authority) got together in the studio in pittsburgh during a week of extreme social unrest in the usa in late 2015, resulting in these recordings. the tracks are crafted with a stripped back electronic funk and a stark, relentless feel that reflects the energy in the air at the time. as long time fans of politically and socially charged music like public enemy, underground resistance, nwa, dopplereffekt, and gil scott-heron, noleian and thomas have taken these influences and mixed them with their own styles to come up with a modern dancefloor version of those ideals. lead track solidarity fills the whole a side with its optimism. soulful melodies and strings conquer the driving rhythms, bringing a sense that through sticking together, a better future is possible. the b side s perspective is darker. police state is a crazy raved out banger that combines gritty acid and harsh tones that channel the day-to-day existence for far too many urban people. the third and final cut, surveillance, is a paranoid, spacey techno track that would be ideal as a soundtrack for closed-circuit television video reels. this snapshot of urban life is tied together through artwork by andrew burger, whose mix of throwback style and current ideas nails the dystopian existence that is now reality as predicted so long ago by orwell, huxley, lucas, and many more.

heard on �melancholia� are interpretations of honzo�s subconscious visions of life. the intense compositions are made up of drones, noises and distorted beats moving in and out of the frame. on opener �orientalism� said elements blend with hi-hat brushes, brassy synth pads, sci-fi noises and distant human voices evoking islam�s �adhan� (call to prayer). the theme contemplates over alienation caused by western accounts of �orientalism�, soaked in �hüzün� (the turkish term for melancholia). on a2 a rework of �moral masochism� is provided by the mysterious shadows outfit, starting with a distorted guitar over a slow and gritty rhythmic backbone which gradually turns into a chaotic high-intensity acid jam on the ep�s most dance floor suitable cut. on the flipside, �lovesickness� presents a broken kick rhythm periodically flipped by toms and accompanied by a disorienting hi-hat rhythm, ghostly strings and sporadic human moans � all resulting in a tribal mood, recalling a ceremony, perhaps a quest for a saviour from the blue temper? b2 presents the �moral masochism� original. again a distorted guitar plays over a slow rhythm, but compared to the remix, the original�s intensity is introverted, contemplating over melancholia�s effect of deriving gratification from self-inflicted moral humiliation. ambient closer �emptiness� explores a cold state with such an encapsulating airiness that it feels like a close account of another person�s mood down to the impression of their breath. arpeggiated synth noises appear from a distance representing increasing pressure from the outside world without ever suppressing the state of mind. as a result, �emptiness� sums up the state of melancholia experienced as a mood rather than the effect of a cause.
